Today is my sons birthday and I thought that I would share with you the letter I wrote to him. I do hope that you find a bit of inspiration in the letter for your own lives.
Happy 18th Birthday to you, my son Tyrone Charles Simmonds. I am honoured to be your father as you are indeed a shining example of how a young man should be in this day and age. I use the word ‘Man’ with great confidence as not only are you eighteen, but you have a deep wisdom that exceeds your eighteen years on earth.
I pray that as you venture into the world that you would do so with the confidence, knowing that you are a child of God. I thank God for the ability that he has given your Mom and I, enabling us to be the best parents possible to you.
I know that you will be an honourable man of your word in everything that you do! Trust is all you have, and all you’ll ever have to measure with. Keep trust as your yardstick, as everything begins and ends with trust. If the trust is gone you no longer have anything, this applies to everything in life.
Love unconditionally with the strength that only vulnerability can give you. Realise that your vulnerability is a superpower given to you by the Lord and remember the only thing you can ask for is wisdom.
Keep your faith and the belief you have, do not allow the masses or the illusion of fear to change you. Know that even if thousands say something and have an opinion; that your truth could be the only truth.
Question everything and think for yourself, remember always hold your thoughts captive by thinking about what you think about when you think. This way you will consistently increase your mind capacity and be successful on a quantum level. Don’t fear when you outgrow those around you, realise that this is the only way to grow. The caterpillar has to go through a painful transformation process in order to become a butterfly.
Never compare or benchmark yourself to others, as doing so is the beginning of failure. Your wisdom is infinite because you are a child of God, he made you so unique that others are intimidated by your strength just as you may be intimidated by the strength of others. However this is the very reason we are social creatures; embrace your differences just as you embrace the differences of those around you. This is God’s design and the more you work authentically with others and their strengths the less labour you will have.
You have nothing to prove to anyone in this world and only your own dreams to fulfil, and as long as you not hurting anyone in that process you will be more than successful. Remember that power in being underestimated and use this power with considerable wisdom.
I can only offer you one key as you venture into this exciting stage of your life, that is the ‘Key of Gratitude’. Gratitude will build doorways where walls only existed and build pathways through the densest jungles of the world. Yes gratitude turns what we have into enough, this is the the grace of our Lord which can be unlocked in every moment through simple acts of Gratitude.
I love you, your Dad – Richard
