Commitment is so important, whether that be with our partners or customers. Imagine entering into a relationship and not finding out whether your partner is on the pill, or not discussing the possibility of children. It is always better to be safe than sorry, if the woman told the man she was not on the pill and he ignored the fact, there may be a surprise waiting. It’s always better to determine the levels of commitment before proceeding in life.
Similarly if we met with a new customer, we would need to determine the level of commitment. How do they react to your request for a deposit? How are they negotiating regarding price? Do you feel that the negotiations have been fair or are you being bullied into a lower price and an objection to your request for a deposit?
Commitment is about observing the signs of your potential partner or customer. If you not convinced they are committed why are you entering into this relationship? If they struggle to find the deposit, they will more than likely struggle to pay the balance or even worse they may never pay you. Observe the behaviour of others and you will save yourself from a lot of problems in the future.
Ultimately when you present a difficult customer with the invoice it will be like telling your partner you are pregnant, the same emotions will be present and they will try to move as far away from you as possible leaving you with the baby or the unpaid invoice. Life is about commitment – look for it in everything you do.
