Have you ever wondered why we do what we do? Yes, whatever you find yourself doing, why are you actually doing it? My hope for you is that your answer was not because you need the money or it was in some way attached to a potential financial gain. Of course we need to make money to survive, but what gives us fulfilment?
Did you know that more than 90% of us don’t feel fulfilled at work, simply because we are not generous? Then by definition if we are not generous then we must be selfish … Yes we are actually all incredibly selfish, okay more than 90% of us are if we are really honest.
Imagine working with generous people? Imagine working with a generous boss? Be careful and look at the above statement ‘we don’t feel fulfilled because we are not generous’. Unfortunately it is not about them and all about me. If I am not fulfilled it is not because I don’t get paid enough; it’s not about the people I work with – it’s all about me. That sounds extremely selfish and if it remains to be all about me, nothing will change, I will always be selfish.
Then what would it take to be generous? You have probably guessed that this has nothing to do with money, as fulfilment comes from giving, not receiving. I am reminded of a saying by Jesse Jackson that says ‘Your children need you presence more than they need your presents.’ Our purpose as people is to make a difference in the lives of people, and the only way to really make a difference is to give people some of you and never because you expect something in return. These acts of generosity may include bringing a colleague an unexpected cup of coffee when they are too busy to get their own, simply listening to them when they need to talk or sometimes the smallest thing like a simple smile will make a huge difference in the lives of others.
What’s in it for YOU?
Nothing is in it for you if you are expecting some material reward. However if you are generous and your focus is on the difference you can make in the lives of others you will have a sense of fulfilment that will be greater than the day you got your biggest bonus ever!
By being generous we are the little pebble in the big pond and only generosity will change and transform people so that they too many be inspired to be generous to those around them. When we are generous it builds trust around us and trust is needed to sustain relationships.
So let’s all go and be generous, somebody out there needs our generosity …
